Who would have thought that a day dedicated to all things spooky and haunted would catch on like wildfire here in India? Whether it’s the sugar rush or the fun of creating a costume, Halloween is something parents and kids can both enjoy together.
It’s incredible to see all the social media posts from parents who dress up their kids in some of the freshest and most creative costumes out there. In fact, many of the costume ideas are dictated by the kids who are inspired by book characters, superheroes or their favourite cartoon. That’s why we thought it’d be fun to showcase some Getlitt members who were willing to dish out the details about this spooky holiday.
Urmi Choudhury and her son Nikhil
Team Getlitt: Why do you and your child love Halloween?
Urmi Choudhury: I love Halloween because it’s one of those occasions when you get to interact with so many people you wouldn’t normally get to. Also, I like decorating the house. My son loves it because he gets to dress up in school and of course because he gets so many candies when he goes trick or treating.
TGL: Who does your child want to dress up as this Halloween?
UC: He wants to dress up as Iron Man this time.
TGL: Who/what did they dress up as last Halloween?
UC: Last year he wanted to dress up as SpiderBat, a character he has created who is a mix of a spider and a bat. So, he dressed up as SpiderMan for school and at night dressed up as Batman while trick or treating.
TGL: What’s the best candy/treat to give on Halloween?
UC: Best candy would be something which is a little bit healthy, and kids love as well. So, I normally go with fruit snacks which are made from fruits and look like gummy bears.
TGL: Which do you prefer – making a costume or styling/buying one? Why?
UC: I prefer making the costume because my son and I both look forward to it. It’s one of our favourite projects.
If your kids are a big a fan of superheroes then why not introduce them to Ninja Nani? A grandmother with superpowers, who can do backflips across a room. How does she get her superpowers? You’ll have to read to find out!
Jianna Jagwani and her Daughter Hanaiya
Team Getlitt: Why do you and your child love Halloween?
Jianna Jagwani: For Hanaiya it’s a chance to imagine and become one of her favourite characters for the day. As for me, I enjoy dressing her up and indulging in her fantasy.
TGL: Who does your child want to dress up as this Halloween?
JJ: Belle from Beauty and the Beast because at the moment she has been watching all the Disney princess movies, and her favourite princess is Belle.
TGL: Who/what did they dress up as last Halloween?
JJ: Minnie Mouse and Wonder Woman. We were in the Philippines last Halloween, and there they have a lot of Halloween celebrations. So she attended 2 Halloween parties. She especially wanted to go as Wonder Woman because her two boy cousins were dressing up as superheroes, so she wanted to be one too.
TGL. What’s the best candy/treat to give on Halloween?
JJ: Miniature chocolate bars, kids love chocolate!
TGL: Which do you prefer – making a costume or styling/buying one? Why?
JJ: Honestly, buying! Less hassle for the parent!
If your daughter loves tales about strong female characters, then she’s going to enjoy reading about little Dip Dip who won’t stop till she finds her neighbour’s cat. Read ‘Catch That Cat‘ and find out just how Dip Dip gets her hands on the naughty cat.
Supriya Amrith and her kids Gianna and Agastya
Team GetLitt: Why do you and your child love Halloween?
Supriya Amrith: We get to dress up in costumes which we don’t get to do in any other festival. The kids obviously love it because of the treats.
TGL. Who does your child want to dress up as this Halloween?
SA: Gianna wants to become a vampire. It’s probably because she loved the animated film ‘Hotel Transylvania’ that she watched this year.
TGL. Who/what did they dress up as last Halloween?
SA: Gia dressed as a Japanese doll and Agu was a farmer. I was a zombie slayer!
TGL: What’s the best candy/treat to give on Halloween?
SA: Gem packets or those 200ml juices boxes
TGL: Which do you prefer – making a costume or styling/buying one? Why?
SA: I prefer making or styling one as it’s a lot more creative and it’s the essence of the holiday.
We have vampires just like the ones in the movie Hotel Transylvania – they are the Noonie family, and they’re just as impressive. Similar to the protagonist in the movie, the daughter in the book Vee Loved Garlic, is just as rebellious and wants to get her whole family to start eating garlic!
Sneha Wadhwani and her kids Ridhaan & Ruhaan
Team GetLitt: Why do you and your child love Halloween?
Sneha Punjabi: There’s something so spooky and fun about dressing up in dark characters and trying to look scary, and you also get treats for the same. Dressing the kids up is my favourite part.
TGL. Who does your child want to dress up as this Halloween?
SP: Given my background in fashion, I love to experiment with looks on the kids, but they always want to be a vampire. So, it’s the same this year too. My older one wants to be a scary Harry Potter, and my younger one still wants to be a vampire in a Batman costume!
TGL. Who/what did they dress up as last Halloween?
SP: My younger son was a pumpkin, and my older One was a vampire bat!
TGL: What’s the best candy/treat to give on Halloween?
SP: Chocolates win hands down.
TGL: Which do you prefer – making a costume or styling/buying one? Why?
SP: I love to work with what we already have and then add on a few things like witch fingers for example, which are easily available in stores. It’s just fun to use the swords, capes or skeleton t-shirts that the boys already possess. The best part is to play with make-up on their faces and use different lipsticks and eye pencils to draw a scar or blood ridden lips.
It’s fun plus there’s a sense of involvement that the child feels with the mother. After all childhood memories are made of precious moments like these!
If your kids love monsters just like these little guys, then why not introduce them to the book – The Monster Hunters. Friends Abhay and Nitya go hunting for monsters that hide under beds, to prove their existence to those who don’t believe. Monsters are hard to find though, will these two friends find monster-evidence?
Arent’s these kid’s costumes just fantastic?
